You write for many many of us & perhaps this is a good case fora general statement and say For all of us women of a certain generation. My son knows for sure that the womna he will marry will keep her maiden name and maybe his offspring might not even take on a second name. This space sometimes feels like an echo chamber but this is in a good sense - we need to know we are not alone in many ways. Sending you a big hug Farah!

Such sweet kids :) it is such a surprise for me to learn this part of India!

The name is indeed something I've also questioned, specifically when I was registering for marriage. In Germany it's often that the couple chooses a family name together, in the old times it's the man's usually but nowadays it could be any. For my Chinese culture, the women doesn't change their name but their kids take on the father's family name by default. So in the end, I didn't change my name, and after a long discussion, we decided on my husband's German surname for kids just for their ease because we live here. The thing is, I question too, my name comes too from my paternal side since time memorial, so it's not like I am fighting for a "mother's name".

It's great that you know your worth and I hope that it will change for the better soon for you and all women!
